Just sent off the latest commissioned piece...

I just shipped out my latest commissioned piece -- the one I mentioned that the groom is giving to his bride for a wedding present.  I can't wait to share it with you, as it was such fun!  But since it is a super secret surprise, it will have to wait until after the lovely bride has laid eyes on it...

I wanted to give you a little peek into my drawing room and table. I have a few commissioned pieces that I could share since I last posted about them on this blog, but here is one that was a pleasure to do.  It is on our local historical register and the current owners purchased the home in the 1970s.  This house turned 100 years old in 2015.

I thought I would share the process for this one.  It is pretty much how I work on all my commissioned pieces.  Here is the original photo that I was sent by the person who commissioned the drawing.

Original photo:

This is the first step (below) in how I work, lightly laying in the beginning sketch.  This is really the crucial point of the drawing and sometimes the longest step, as I must get the perspective right, the house straight, all the angles relating to the horizon correctly, etc.  There is a lot of sketching and erasing happening in this step! ;)

Once I am satisfied that the house looks correct from all angles (and doesn't look like it's falling over to one side or the other) and is proportionally correct (the porch isn't too large for the house, the steps are proportional to the door, the windows aren't too large or small, etc.) I can begin to fill in details.  This is where the fun takes over.

Filling in details is about texture, shading, and all the architectural nuances that make a house a house... the boards on the wall next to the windows, the stonework on the porch, the little architectural details under the eaves, etc. When filling in, I work as much as possible from left to right and top to bottom, as the graphite will smear while I am working (right-handed) and rubbing back and forth over the areas.  I also use a piece of parchment to cover areas that I have already filled in, so that they are protected from my (very active) hand and arm.

Some of the most challenging details about some houses are the windows, especially if the surrounding trim and wood is white, as the ones on either side of the front door here.  It is difficult to get the panes all uniform and straight lines without distorting the white trim around them because the white part is the negative space.  It's much easier if the trim is darker than the panes.

I loved doing this house because there were so many different textures and features. It is really amazing to me how much this makes me appreciate what architects do.  To think this beautiful thing was designed and built in 1915 and is still so beautifully standing and giving shelter to this family today just amazes me.

With all of the house finished except the roof, I get to thinking about the landscape.  I have to be sure that the house is covered with parchment during this step because this when my fingers fly.  Shrubs and grasses and trees and flowers are a lot of fun.  As you have probably gathered by now, I really enjoy doing these.  I am thankful that people continue to ask me to do them, and each one is unique and special.  And so we've made our way back to where this post started, the finished product...

One thing that I do while I draw is pray for the families who are represented by the homes... those who live there, those who have lived there and have moved on, those who are giving the gift to the ones who live or lived there.  It is a privilege to be able to touch a family in this way. This is just a little taste of my commissioned work, but I also still love to paint and take the opportunity to "play with color" in between my commissioned drawings.

A Blessing for You

So, because my last post was a little on the negative side, I am posting something encouraging today.  Here is a scripture we memorized in our ladies group a while back, when we were making our way through the book of Ephesians.  I am posting it here as encouragement for you.  Always remember that you are uniquely special and dearly loved by the One who created you!  There really is no way to truly comprehend His love... and feel free to copy and use this graphic if you'd like to.  We used it to help us memorize, but use it however you'd like.

Speaking of Spinning... and Not Being Antisocial

Does social media make your head spin, or is it just me?

My first foray in the social media world was Facebook.  Ahhh... what a great tool for connecting with all those friends from different eras of my past.  I really do love that aspect of it.  And, now that I have a 3 month-old nephew whom I never get to see in person (seriously, have you ever seen a baseball that cute???), it is a great way for me to "virtually" watch him grow.  But, Facebook really is so here today and gone tomorrow... and even though it saves my things, I have a hard time going back and finding something my friends have posted.  When I check Facebook, one minute something is there and the next it is gone.  I think to myself, "Wait, I wanted to read that."  Have you had a conversation with someone you wish you could go back and reread? I sure have... but, the posts just keep on scrolling ...and scrolling ...and scrolling by.

Then Twitter came along, the place where you can say whatever you want to for the world to see -- or at least your followers -- in 140 characters or less.  I think we can all plainly see why this one didn't work out for me...

Next there was Pinterest... what a great concept: a great visual representation of a link that I want to save.  And, I am such a visual person that it was perfect for me.  You know, the instant recipe keeper for all those delicious looking recipes you see in images all over the internet.
It was also a great tool for organizationally challenged people looking to improve their organizing skills (me!)  And it was the perfect spot for curating a whole bunch of loveliness in one place.  However, three years down the road half of my image links no longer work.  So that recipe I put off trying for so long still looks great in the image, I just have no idea where the recipe is.  And the organizational site went "poof!" just like my organizational skills.

And then there was Instagram.  Visual instant gratification... "Hey family and friends, look at me doing this or that right now!" ...but with no real conversation (unless you count hashtags... don't even get me started on twentyhashtagsononepicturethaticannotreadbecausetheyallruntogether!!) And again, the images just keep scrolling and scrolling.  If I want to see something from 3 weeks ago I have to 1. remember who posted it, 2. find that person's username, and 3. go look through all their images until I see it.  Too much trouble... I'd rather just move on.

Which brings me right back to where I started ever having conversations online.  I am back here hoping for some meaningful dialogue (or even monologue, should no one care to read it!) interspersed with images and links that hopefully will be more (or less) permanent.  And I am thankful that there are still a number of you who feel the same way!

Not really antisocially,

Looking toward the new year...

It was this time last year when I decided that rather than making resolutions, I wanted to have a theme for 2008. That theme came from the desire for 2008 to be a year filled with the "Fruit of Thankfulness." As I look toward 2009, I want to again allow the Lord to lead me. I want to seek to follow Him in every area of my life. I am thinking now of Proverbs 3:5-6 which says I should trust in Him with all my heart, that I should not trust in or lean on my own wisdom or understanding, that I should think of or acknowledge Him in all my ways... and that if I do these things, He promises to direct my path or make my path straight. A straight path is so much easier to navigate and so much less hazardous than one with twists, turns, and nuances that are unexpected. I don't know about you, but I like the thought of walking on the straight path with level ground around my feet at all times. He can even make the hills and valleys seem level if I am walking closely with Him.

This past year has been one of rediscovering my love for artwork and just the creative process in general. I am so thankful for what the Lord has done in my life over this past year. And while rediscovering my artwork was exciting, it means nothing apart from Him. So I am looking forward to this year with great anticipation that whatever it might hold, the joy is not in what happens but in the One with whom I am walking through it. I pray the same for you... may you discover that the joy is not in the circumstances or in the "doing"... but the real joy comes from knowing the One who has created you, gifted you, and brought you to the place in which you find yourself.

May God bless you in 2009 as never before,
From Charm & Grace Cottage

Fruitful Fridays...

Two weeks ago I gave you a sneak peek of a sketch I was working on for a friend. This precious lady lost her husband last year and has had a tough year since he passed away. He and she were performers in the award-winning American West Reenactment and Performance group, Southwest Legends Gunfighters. They so enjoyed doing this together that as a tribute to his memory, she asked me to do a sketch of her in costume standing by his "gravesite" at the Southwest Legends Gunfighters' cemetery called Boot Hill. I consider it an honor to have been able to do this sketch of her and hope that it will be a source of comfort to her.

Fruitful Fridays...

This week I have been one busy camper... we are putting our house on the market, so I have had lots to do aside from artwork. However, I have had a chance to do a little bit of

Fruitful Fridays...

Along with gearing up for the school year, I have been working on a few things this week. I am doing a series of pencil drawings inspired by...

...Victoria magazine.

hollyhocks and roses...

...and some other white flowers yet to come.

Then there is this picture (below) that I am doing for a friend. It's a sweet story which, if she gives her permission, I will tell you all about it once it is complete.

And then I threw in a little surprise... since I have never posted a picture of myself, I thought I would share my little workspace (with me actually in it this time.)

Yes, this is my little corner (literally) of the world... or make that my little corner of the dining room! This is where the elbow grease happens... the inspiration comes before and sometimes during the "elbow grease" process. Happy Fruitful Friday to all!

Fruitful Fridays... update on my dad

This week has been an unusual week, and I have not really gotten all that much artwork done, even though I needed to. So goes the ebb and flow of life. There have been more pressing family issues that I have had the privilege of dealing with.

So many of you have prayed for and asked about my dad. Four years ago he had a very mild heart attack. They put in a stint then and he recovered quickly and quite well. After doing a stress test a couple of weeks ago, they found he had major blockage again in one of his arteries... after looking at the pictures from the surgery I could see that it was almost completely blocked. And it was right at the site where they had put in the stint previously. Weird. He also has 50% blockage in another artery. They dissolved the major blockage and put in a new stint inside the old one. Again, he seems to be recovering well... I am happy to report that I spoke with him just a few hours prior to writing this (around 10 pm Thursday night), and he was doing very well. He had even made a small trip to Wal*Mart. He is being well taken care of, and I am very thankful about that as I am 2 1/2 hours away. I am thankful for all that the doctors can do and what God does through them. I am also very thankful for all of you for your prayers and e-mails. You are the best!

I will try to have more fruits of my "artwork" labor next week. Since this is a new blog which was started in June, I wanted to post here what I shared on my old blog about my theme for this year:

[Originally posted January 2008] We have officially turned the page on 2008, and I wanted to share my theme for the year: Fruit of Thankfulness. (I like a “theme” so much better than making resolutions.) There’s a reason for this theme, and I thought I’d share that with you dear friends who come here to read my thoughts and look at my photos.

I began 2007 with learning a higher level of web design through Macromedia Dreamweaver and then in February launching the Charm & Grace website. I ended 2007 fully into web design and also sharing with you the drawings I had done for family. In the midst of it all I was encouraged by family and friends in both these artistic endeavors, as well as others I have been involved in (painting, calligraphy, writing, even silk flower design.) Back at the beginning of 2007, I realized that I would need to incorporate my business if I were going to be paid to do web design. So, I began to think and pray about what name to give my business. As I looked for names, I discovered the Greek word for fruit, “karpos.” When I think of creativity and the source of it, I know that my gifts have been given to me by God. I am thankful that 2007 was a fruitful one, and my goal for 2008 is that my creative pursuits will yield fruit inspired by my thankfulness for all God’s many blessings. I hope to share some “fruit” with you throughout the year, and soon I will be launching my Karpos website (now launched) which will showcase the different facets of my business. (And now I also have a website showcasing my artwork here.)

Not only am I thankful for all that has happened in 2007, in my creative endeavors, but I am also thankful for all the friends I have made through this amazing technological world. You have enriched my life and encouraged my pursuits. You have shared a bit of yourself with me, and for this I am truly grateful. May each of you have a richly blessed 2008.

I am truly thankful for and inspired by each one of you who take time to stop by my blog, to read my posts, to look at the photos, and to leave comments. I really don't understand why you would, but you do. Each one of you is dear to me and cherished.

Fruitful Fridays...

Lots of projects going on these days... I am trying very hard to be fruitful and disciplined with my time (for those of you who don't know me well, that means turning over a new leaf.)

This is a favorite spot on the campus of the college from which I graduated.

This is a pencil drawing inspired by a picture from Victoria Magazine.

This is a local botanical garden which I have wanted to draw for a while...

An oil painting...

And a little advertising design...

Yes, it's a fruit-filled Friday, all right!
